Alright, let’s talk about them bricks, you know, the ones for your house face. Folks call ’em face bricks, I reckon. Now, how big are they? That’s what we’re here to figure out, ain’t it?
Well, it ain’t as simple as just one size, see. It’s like tryin’ to find one shoe that fits everyone, just ain’t gonna happen. Some places, like America I hear, they got their own sizes. They like to measure things in them inches, you know, the little marks on the ruler. They got a brick that’s about 3 and 5/8 inches thick, 2 and 1/4 inches tall, and 7 and 5/8 inches long. That’s what they call a standard brick over there, I guess.
But then you got other places, and they use somethin’ else, like them “millimeters” or somethin’. Don’t ask me what that is, sounds fancy. They talk about bricks bein’ 230 millimeters long and 110 millimeters wide. Sounds like a lot, but I reckon it’s about the same size, just measured different. You know, like how some folks say “pop” and others say “soda,” it’s all the same thing in the end.
- Standard Size (USA): About 3-5/8 inches thick, 2-1/4 inches tall, and 7-5/8 inches long.
- Another Size (Metric): Around 230mm long and 110mm wide.
Now, what’s this “double course” thing I heard about? Well, it ain’t a bigger brick, not exactly. It’s more like usin’ two layers of them regular bricks, one on top of the other. Makes the wall thicker, I suppose. Smart, ain’t it? Kinda like wearin’ two coats when it’s cold.
And there’s more, believe it or not. Different companies, they make all sorts of sizes. Glen-Gery, that’s a name I heard, they got a whole bunch of different ones. Some are solid all the way through, some got holes in ‘em, some got a little frog, you know, a dent on one side. Why? I ain’t got a clue, but they must have a reason. Maybe it makes ‘em lighter, or maybe it helps the mortar stick better. Who knows?
So, if you’re lookin’ to buy some face bricks, you gotta figure out what size you need. It depends on what you’re buildin’, and maybe where you’re buildin’ it. And don’t forget to ask about them different types, the solid ones, the ones with holes, all that. It can get a bit confusing, I tell ya.
Best thing to do is go talk to the folks at the brickyard. They know their stuff, better than this old woman. They can tell you what size is best for your job, and how many you’ll need. And they can probably explain all them fancy terms, like “double course” and “frogged body,” better than I ever could. Just remember, measure twice, cut once, that’s what my old man used to say.
But at the end of the day, a brick is a brick, ain’t it? It’s just a lump of clay, baked hard in a fire. But put enough of them together, and you got yourself a house, or a wall, or whatever you need. And that’s somethin’, ain’t it?
So yeah, brick sizes. It ain’t as easy as you think, but hopefully, I helped you make a little sense of it. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make some supper. All this talk about bricks is makin’ me hungry!
