Alright, let’s gab about these newfangled brick houses, the ones they call “modern.” I’ve seen a few around, and let me tell ya, some are right purdy, and some…well, some look like they fell outta the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. But that’s just my old lady opinion, mind you.
First off, they got all sorts of colors now. Back in my day, a brick was red, and that was that. Now you got yer earthy tones, like that fancy terracotta color, beige, and even some kinda muted red. Looks nice, I gotta say, kinda warm and cozy-like. And they ain’t just smooth no more, they got all sorts of textures, makes ya wanna run yer hand over ’em. And then there’s the gray and green bricks, which I guess some folks like to make things look fancy. They say it “balances” things out, whatever that means. They even paint some bricks white, can you believe it? And then they go and put black paint on the trim, so it sticks out like a sore thumb. Makes the windows and doors pop, I guess.
Speaking of windows, these modern houses, they got windows bigger than my whole darn kitchen! They call ’em “floor-to-ceiling windows”. Guess it lets in a lot of light, but I tell ya, it also lets everyone see right in. Not sure I like that much nosy neighbor potential. And the houses themselves, they ain’t just square boxes no more. They got all sorts of funny shapes and angles, they call it “change in elevation”. Makes ’em look interesting, I suppose, but I bet it’s a pain in the neck to clean them corners.
- Now, about that “natural simplicity” they talk about. If you’re out in the sticks, surrounded by trees and such, it makes sense to build a house that fits in. Use natural colors and materials, don’t go makin’ it too flashy. That’s what I always say, keep it simple, stupid! (Don’t tell nobody I said that last part.)
- Then there’s the “clean lines” they always blabber on about. Means there ain’t a bunch of fancy doodads and curlicues everywhere. Everything’s straight and to the point, which I guess is alright if you like that sort of thing. They also like things “minimalist,” which just means they don’t put a lot of junk in their houses, far as I can tell. And they want everything to be “functional,” meaning it’s gotta work right, not just look pretty. Sounds sensible enough, I reckon.
- And they love their “open floor plan”. Means there ain’t a bunch of walls separating the kitchen from the living room and all that. Guess it makes the house feel bigger, but I kinda like having separate rooms myself. Where else am I gonna hide my candy stash from them grandkids? Oh, and they like “bright colors” too. Maybe a bright red door or some such. Adds a little pizzazz, I guess.
They also got these fancy brick fences now, all with different patterns. Some are plain and simple, others are all zigzags and whatnots. I guess it’s nice to have a purdy fence around your yard, keeps the critters out and the kids in. And they have these “modern house elevations” which is just a fancy way of sayin’ they want the outside of the house to look pretty. It’s important to them I reckon. And they also look at old houses, the “mid-century modern” ones, for ideas. Those were kinda like the first modern houses, I guess. They had big windows and simple shapes, just like the ones they’re building now. Whether you like it or not is another question. Some folks love that rusty warm look, some don’t. Some like those buildings that look like factories, some like those that look…not like factories, you know?
So, there ya have it, my take on these modern brick houses. Some good, some bad, some just plain weird. But hey, to each their own, I always say. As long as it keeps the rain out and the heat in, I reckon it’s a good enough house. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make myself a cup of tea and sit on the porch. All this talk about houses has tired me out.
