So, I’ve always wanted a pizza oven, you know, the kind that makes those crispy, delicious pizzas. I decided to build one myself using bricks. Yep, a brick pizza oven. Let me tell you, it was quite the adventure.
First, I had to dig and prep the site. It’s like preparing the canvas for a painting, you know? I spent a day just clearing out the space where this oven was going to live. Removed all the grass, leveled the ground. My back was aching, but it was worth it.
Next up, I built a form for the concrete. Think of it like a mold, but for the foundation. I used some old wood planks I had lying around and made a square frame. Poured the concrete in, let it set. Took a couple of days, but I wasn’t in a rush. Patience, my friends, patience.
Then came the fun part – laying the bricks. Now, I’m no bricklayer, but I watched a bunch of videos and figured, how hard could it be? I got myself a big pile of bricks, some mortar, and started building. One brick at a time, slowly but surely, the oven started to take shape. It wasn’t perfect, a bit wobbly in places, but hey, it was mine.
Building the dome was the trickiest part. I had to shape the bricks, make them fit together like a puzzle. It took a lot of trial and error, a lot of sweat, and maybe a few curse words, but eventually, I got it done. A nice, rounded dome, just like I imagined.
Understanding the basics took a while. Pizza brick ovens use wood-fired heat to cook pizzas really fast and evenly, so I had to make sure my oven could handle high temperatures.
Once the oven was built, I let it dry for a week. I know some people say to wait for up to a month, but I couldn’t wait that long. Then, I lit my first fire. It was a small one, just to test it out. The heat was intense, and I could feel the warmth radiating from the bricks. Success!
After a couple of test runs, I cooked my first pizza. I threw in some wood, got the fire going, and slid the pizza in. It cooked in minutes. The crust was crispy, the cheese was bubbly, and the taste? Oh man, it was amazing. Better than any pizza I’ve ever had.
Building this pizza oven was a lot of work. It took time, effort, and a bit of money. This isn’t necessarily cheaper than buying a finished oven, but it is sure a ton of fun doing it.
I ended up adding some tiles to the outside, just to make it look pretty. It’s now the centerpiece of my backyard.

Looking back, it was a great experience. I learned a lot, got my hands dirty, and now I have a cool pizza oven to show off. Plus, I get to eat delicious pizza whenever I want. If you’re thinking about building one, I say go for it. Just be prepared for some hard work, and you’ll be enjoying homemade pizza in no time.
