Okay, so I wanted to build a fire pit in my backyard. Figured it would be a nice spot to chill with friends, you know? First thing I did was decide on the size. I went for a 3-foot diameter – seemed like a good size, not too big, not too small.
Then came the fun part – picking out the bricks. I chose those face bricks with holes in them. I heard they’re easier to split with a brick hammer, and let me tell you, that was some good advice.
- Step 1: Gather your materials.
- Step 2: Mark out the circle for your fire pit.
- Step 3: Start laying bricks!
Now, I needed to figure out how many bricks to get. After a little digging around, I found out that for a 3-foot fire pit, you roughly need around 80 bricks. Sounded about right to me.
Breaking the Bricks
I started by marking out the circle on the ground where the fire pit would go. Then, I got to work laying down the first layer of bricks. Since I wanted a nice curve, I had to break some bricks in half. Honestly, it was way easier than I expected. Just a few taps with the hammer, and they split pretty cleanly.
I kept laying bricks, making sure each layer was level. It took a bit of time, but it was actually kind of therapeutic, like a giant puzzle. It’s way easier to form the curve of the pit walls with half bricks.
After a few hours of work, I finally finished laying all the bricks. Stepped back, and bam! There it was, my very own fire pit. It looked pretty darn good, if I do say so myself.
The Final Touch
I let the mortar set overnight, and the next day, I fired it up for the first time. Worked like a charm! Now I’ve got a sweet spot to hang out, roast some marshmallows, and enjoy the evenings.
So yeah, that’s how I built my fire pit. If you’re thinking about doing it yourself, I’d say go for it. It’s a fun project, and the result is totally worth it!
