Okay, folks, let’s talk about my adventure building an outdoor brick oven. I’ve always loved the idea of making my own pizzas and bread, and I finally decided to take the plunge and build one myself.
It all started with a crazy idea. I saw some cool pictures of brick ovens online, and I thought, “Hey, I can do that!” I’m no expert, but I’m pretty handy, so I figured I’d give it a shot.

Planning and Prep
First things first, I needed a plan. I sketched out some rough ideas, watched a bunch of YouTube videos (seriously, a ton), and read some articles online. It seemed doable, but definitely a project.
I decided to build it in my backyard, in a spot that was far enough from the house but still convenient. I cleared the area, leveled the ground, and poured a concrete slab for the base. That was a workout in itself, let me tell you! Mixing and pouring concrete is no joke.
Building the Base
Once the concrete cured, I started building the base. I used cinder blocks because they’re cheap and strong. I stacked them up, mortaring them together like a giant Lego set. It wasn’t pretty, but it was solid.
Constructing the Oven
Now for the fun part – the oven itself! I used firebricks for the dome and the cooking surface, because they can handle the high temperatures. Regular bricks would crack under that kind of heat.
- I built a wooden form to support the dome as I laid the bricks. This was probably the trickiest part. It was like building a 3D puzzle, with each brick needing to fit just right.
- Slowly but surely, the dome started to take shape. I used a special refractory mortar to hold the firebricks together. This stuff is designed to withstand extreme heat.
- I added a chimney at the front to let the smoke out. No one wants a smoky backyard!
Finishing Touches
Once the dome was done, I removed the wooden form. It was a bit nerve-wracking, hoping it wouldn’t all collapse! Luckily, it held up perfectly.
I let the mortar cure for a few days, then built a small fire inside to test it out. It worked! The oven heated up nicely, and the smoke went straight up the chimney.

I added some finishing touches, like a door for the oven and some decorative stonework around the base. It actually started to look like something you’d see in a fancy pizzeria!
The First Bake
The First Bake!
Finally, it was time for the moment of truth – baking my first pizza! I preheated the oven for a good hour, then slid in my homemade pizza. It cooked in just a few minutes, with a perfectly crispy crust and bubbling cheese. It was amazing! Seriously, the best pizza I’ve ever had, probably because i made it from 0 by this oven.
Since then, I’ve baked bread, roasted vegetables, and even cooked a whole chicken in the oven. It’s been a fantastic addition to my backyard, and it’s definitely a conversation starter when people come over.
It was a lot of work, but totally worth it. If you’re thinking about building your own brick oven, I say go for it! Just be prepared for some sweat, some challenges, and a whole lot of fun.
