Okay, folks, let’s talk about sprucing up that old brick fireplace! I decided to tackle this project myself, and let me tell you, it’s totally doable. Here’s how I went about using high heat paint for my fireplace brick.
Getting Started
First things first, I needed to pick the right paint. I did some digging, asked around, seems like acrylic-latex paint is made to be heat resistant. Sounded good to me! It also said, the paint can have some versatility, even better!

Prepping the Area
Before I even touched the paint, I had to get the fireplace ready. This is probably the most important step, honestly.
- Cleaning: I gave those bricks a good scrub down. I used some soapy water and a stiff brush to get rid of any dust, soot, or whatever else was clinging to them. You want a nice, clean surface for the paint to stick to.
- Checking the Mortar: Make sure your brick and filling between are okay, fill any cracks. If the mortar is crumbling or there are big gaps, you might need to fix that first. I didn’t have any major issues, thankfully, just a few small spots I touched up with some extra mortar.
Painting time!
Now for the fun part (well, kind of fun). I made sure I chose a heat-resistant paint specifically because, duh, it’s a fireplace!
- First Coat: Put the pain on, I used a regular paintbrush for the edges and a roller for the larger areas. I made sure to get into all those nooks and crannies of the brick.
- Wait Time: Patience is key! I let that first coat dry completely. Check the instructions on your paint can for how long to wait.
- Second painting: Same as the first, I give a second painting. Another thin coat, making sure everything was evenly covered.
The End Result
I waited to dry it, and stepped back to admire my handiwork. It looks so much better! The old, dingy brick is gone, and now I’ve got a fireplace that looks fresh. The color is perfect, and it totally brightens up the whole room.
Seriously, if I can do this, anyone can. Just take your time, prep the area, and use the right paint. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes!
