Okay, so I’ve always wanted a fire pit in my backyard. You know, somewhere to chill with friends, roast marshmallows, and just enjoy those cool evenings. I finally decided to stop dreaming and actually build one myself. And guess what? I went with a classic brick fire pit. Here’s how it all went down.
Planning and Prep
First things first, I had to figure out where to put this thing. I picked a spot that was far enough from the house, trees, and anything else that could catch fire. Safety first, people! Then, I checked with the local authorities about any rules or permits. Turns out, I was good to go as long as I followed some basic guidelines.

Next, I sketched out a rough design. I wanted something simple and circular, about four feet in diameter. Nothing fancy, just a good ol’ fire pit. With my plan in hand, I headed to the home improvement store and loaded up on supplies:
- Bricks (lots of them!) – I chose regular red clay bricks.
- Paver base – for a solid foundation.
- Landscape fabric – to keep weeds from popping up.
- Construction adhesive – to hold the bricks together.
- A shovel, a level, a rubber mallet, and a measuring tape.
Building the Base
Back home, I marked the circle on the ground using some spray paint. Then, the digging began. I removed the grass and soil to a depth of about six inches, making sure the bottom was nice and level. This was probably the most tiring part, to be honest.
After that, I laid down the landscape fabric to prevent weeds. Then, I poured in the paver base and spread it evenly, compacting it as much as possible. This gave me a solid, level surface to start building on.
Laying the Bricks
Now for the fun part! I started laying the first layer of bricks, arranging them in a circle. I didn’t use any adhesive on the first layer, just to make sure everything fit perfectly. I used the rubber mallet to tap them into place and the level to make sure they were even.
Once I was happy with the first layer, I started on the second. This time, I applied construction adhesive to each brick before placing it, staggering the joints like you would with a regular brick wall. This made the whole thing much sturdier. I kept adding layers, checking the level and making adjustments as I went.
I ended up with four layers of bricks, which gave me a fire pit that was about a foot high. Perfect!

Finishing Touches
I let the adhesive dry overnight. The next day, I filled the gaps between the bricks with some extra paver base, just to make it look a bit neater. And that was it! My very own brick fire pit, ready for action.
The first fire was amazing. We sat around it for hours, telling stories and roasting marshmallows. It was exactly what I had envisioned. And you know what? Building it myself made it even more special. It wasn’t perfect, a few bricks maybe are not perfectly aligned, but it was mine. If I can do it, you totally can too!
