Okay, so I decided to build a fire pit in my backyard. It seemed like a fun weekend project, you know? But first, I needed to figure out how many bricks I’d actually need. Didn’t want to end up halfway through and have to run back to the store.
Figuring Out the Size
First things first, I had to decide how big this thing was gonna be. I grabbed a measuring tape and marked out a circle in the yard. I went with a diameter of about 4 feet, seemed like a good size, not too huge, not too small.

Doing Some Math (Ugh)
Okay, I am not a math whiz, but I knew I needed to calculate the circumference of the circle. Remembered that old formula from school: Circumference = π (pi) diameter. So, 3.14 times 4 feet… that’s roughly 12.56 feet.
Brick Size Matters
Next, I measured one of the bricks I picked out. Standard red brick, nothing fancy. It was about 8 inches long. Had to convert that to feet, so 8 inches divided by 12 inches/foot is about 0.67 feet.
Bricks Per Layer
Now, I divided the circumference (12.56 feet) by the length of one brick (0.67 feet). Came out to around 19 bricks per layer. Easy peasy!
How High to Go?
I wanted the fire pit to be about a foot tall. Since each brick is about 4 inches high (or 0.33 feet), I figured I needed 3 layers of bricks (1 foot / 0.33 feet/brick = ~3 bricks).
Total Brick Count
Finally, time to get the total brick count!
- Bricks of one layer:19.
- Layers:3.
So the total is 57.

The Final Tally
So, 19 bricks per layer, times 3 layers…that’s 57 bricks. I added a few extra just in case some broke or I messed up. Ended up buying 60 bricks, and it was just about perfect! The fire pit looks great, and now I can enjoy some cozy evenings outdoors.
