Okay, guys, let’s talk about how I built my own brick barbecue with a chimney. It was a fun project, and I’m stoked to share the whole process with you.
Getting Started
First things first, I gathered all my materials. I’m talking bricks, obviously – I chose a classic red brick, but you do you. You’ll also need mortar mix, a trowel, a level, a shovel, a measuring tape, and some sturdy gloves. Oh, and don’t forget a wheelbarrow for mixing the mortar – trust me, it makes things way easier.

Laying the Foundation
I started by digging a shallow foundation. It doesn’t need to be super deep, just enough to create a stable base. Make sure the ground is level – this is crucial for the whole structure. Once I had the foundation dug, I mixed up a batch of mortar according to the instructions on the bag. Then, I started laying the first course of bricks, making sure to apply a good layer of mortar between each brick and checking the level constantly.
Building Up the Walls
Once the first course was down, I just kept building up the walls, one course at a time. I used a staggered pattern, like you see in any brick wall, to make it strong. And remember to keep checking that level! If things start to go crooked, it’ll only get worse as you go higher. Use trowel tapping bricks to make sure.
Creating the Firebox
The firebox is where the magic happens. I left an opening in the front for adding fuel, of course. I also created a raised platform inside the firebox using some extra bricks and mortar. This helps with airflow and keeps the coals off the bottom.
Building the Chimney
Now for the chimney! This is basically just a continuation of the walls, but it gets narrower as it goes up. I gradually sloped the bricks inward on each course to create that classic chimney shape. Again, keep checking the level and make sure everything is nice and sturdy. I also made a rebar layer to make my barbecue stronger.
Finishing Touches
Once the mortar was fully dry (I gave it a few days just to be safe), I cleaned up any excess mortar with a wire brush. And that’s pretty much it! I now have a fully functional, super cool-looking brick barbecue with a chimney.
I build a metal box to protect the fire box.

The First Cookout!
Of course, I had to test it out right away. I loaded up the firebox with charcoal, got it nice and hot, and threw on some burgers and hot dogs. They cooked perfectly, and I have to say, food just tastes better when you cook it on something you built yourself!
- It is not too difficult.
- Take your time, and follow instructions.
- It is safety, so take care of the bricks and mortar.
So there you have it – my brick barbecue building adventure! I hope this inspires you to give it a try. It’s a rewarding project, and you’ll have a sweet grilling setup for years to come.
