Okay, so the firebricks in my wood stove were looking pretty rough. Cracked, crumbling, basically useless. It was definitely time to replace them before I started using the stove again this winter. Here’s how I did it:
Gathering Supplies
First, I needed to get my hands on some new firebricks. I just went to the local hardware store.

- New firebricks Make sure you buy enough.
- A sturdy scraper – because the old stuff can be a pain to get out.
- Gloves– It protected my hands.
- Safety glasses– Safety first, always.
- A dust mask – Breathing in brick dust is no fun.
- A shop vacuum – For cleaning up all the mess.
Out with the Old
Next, I tackled the old firebricks. I put on my gloves, safety glasses, and dust mask. This part is messy, so don’t skip the safety gear!
I used the scraper to pry out the old bricks. Some were easy to remove, just falling apart. Others were really stuck in there, so I had to give them a good whack with the scraper and a hammer (carefully!).
Once all the old bricks were out, I used the shop vacuum to clean up all the dust and debris inside the stove. I wanted a nice, clean surface for the new bricks.
In with the New
Installing the new firebricks was pretty straightforward. It’s a bit like putting together a puzzle. I just started placing the bricks along the bottom and sides of the stove, making sure they fit snugly together.
Some of the bricks needed to be cut to size. I carefully scored it with the utility knife and then snapped it along the line. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked!
I just kept fitting the bricks in until the entire inside of the stove was lined. No mortar or anything needed, just a tight fit.

The Final Touches
Once all the new bricks were in place, I vacuumed up any remaining dust and gave the inside of the stove a good wipe down.
And that’s it! My wood stove is now ready for the winter, with a brand new lining of firebricks. It wasn’t a super difficult job, but it definitely made a big difference in how efficiently my stove will burn.
