Oh, lemme tell ya, if you’re thinkin’ ’bout buildin’ a nice brick grill kit in yer backyard, it’s easier than ya might think! Don’t need fancy skills or big ol’ plans, just a few simple things. Startin’ with some good ol’ bricks, maybe a grill kit, and a bit of patience. Now, I may not know much about fancy buildin’, but makin’ a grill with bricks is like makin’ a cozy corner for all yer BBQ cookin’.
First, ya gotta get the right kinda bricks. Not just any ol’ brick will do, lemme tell ya that. You wanna go with them heavy-duty bricks – sometimes they call ’em “engineering bricks.” They’re tougher than the usual bricks, so they hold up well when things get hot ‘n’ heavy with yer grill. Most folks say ya need around 100 to 120 bricks, dependin’ on how high you want the grill to be. But don’t worry; ya don’t gotta count ’em all exact – just close enough will do.
Alright, now we got bricks covered, but that ain’t all. Yer also gonna need a few other things. Most brick grill kits come with a grill rack or tray, and that’s where the magic happens. This here’s where yer meat, veggies, and all the good stuff sits while it cooks. Get yerself a stainless steel rack if ya can – them things last forever, even if ya keep ’em outside in the rain ‘n’ sun.
Here’s the stuff you’ll need:
- About 110–120 strong bricks, like engineering bricks
- A sturdy grill tray or rack, preferably stainless steel
- A solid level ground – don’t wanna build it on no wobbly surface!
- A bit of mortar to hold the bricks together
- And, of course, some gloves and tools to keep ya safe while workin’
Now, buildin’ this grill ain’t too hard, but ya gotta do it step by step. First, pick a good flat spot in yer yard. Make sure it’s level, or yer grill will look like it’s had a few too many drinks, if ya catch my meanin’. Lay out yer bricks in a nice rectangle or square shape, dependin’ on how wide ya want it. Some folks go fancy and make a round one, but hey, we’re keepin’ it simple here.
Once ya got the first layer of bricks down, slap on a bit of mortar between each one. This here’s what keeps ’em from movin’ around. Don’t gotta use too much – just enough to hold ’em in place. Now, keep addin’ bricks layer by layer, usin’ more mortar each time. Usually, ya go about three or four bricks high – tall enough to hold the heat, but not so tall that you can’t reach yer steaks when it’s time to flip ‘em!
When ya got them layers all stacked up, it’s time to put on the grill tray. Now, some brick grill kits come with these little metal notches or “brackets” that hold the grill at just the right height. If yer kit has those, great! Just put ’em in place on the sides of the bricks, and set the grill on top. If it don’t, ya can wedge the grill right on the top layer of bricks. No fuss, no muss.
Once that grill is sittin’ pretty on top, well, yer pretty much set! Give the mortar a day or so to dry, and yer good to go. Now, when ya fire up that grill for the first time, let it burn for a good bit before ya throw on any food. This here’s called “seasonin’” the grill, and it helps get rid of any dust or whatnot left from buildin’.
Now, some folks like to get fancy with their brick BBQ grill, addin’ extra layers or even a chimney to keep the smoke blowin’ just right. That’s all well and good, but if ya keep it simple like I do, it works just fine. Plus, it looks real nice in the yard, just sittin’ there like it’s always been part of the family. And when ya smell that first batch of burgers cookin’ on yer homemade grill, well, that’s just about as good as it gets!
