Alright, so I’ve been messing around with this stuff called aluminium silicate blanket lately, and let me tell you, it’s pretty neat. I needed to insulate this old furnace in my workshop, you know, the one I use for my metal projects and it was leaking heat like crazy. I did some digging online and found out about these blankets. They are mainly used in aerospace. I thought, “If it’s good enough for rockets, it’s gotta be good enough for my furnace, right?”
So, I ordered a roll. When it arrived, it felt a bit like those thick felt blankets, but way denser. I was actually surprised at how heavy it was. The whole idea is that it’s made from these fine aluminum silicate fibers all tangled together. And these blankets can handle super high temperatures.

First thing I did was to clean up my furnace. I took off all the old insulation, which was basically falling apart anyway. There was dust and grime everywhere. It was a real mess!
Getting to Work
- Cleaning: I swept and vacuumed the inside of the furnace, making sure to get rid of all the loose bits and dust.
- Measuring: I measured the inside of the furnace, and wrote down the numbers to figure out how much of the blanket I needed to cut. I didn’t want to waste any of this stuff.
- Cutting: I rolled out the blanket and cut it into pieces according to my measurements. I used a utility knife, but it was tough. A stronger pair of scissors would’ve been better.
- Wrapping: Then came the fun part – wrapping the furnace. I started from the bottom and worked my way up, overlapping each layer a bit to make sure there weren’t any gaps.
- Securing: Once it was all wrapped up, I secured the blanket with some high-temperature wire. I just wrapped it around like a big bandage.
It wasn’t rocket science, but it did take some time and effort. The cutting was the hardest part, to be honest. My hands were pretty sore by the end of it. Anyway, I fired up the furnace after letting everything set, and wow, what a difference! It heated up faster, and the outside was way cooler to the touch. It’s clear that the stable state air was separated by those fibers, just like what I read online.
I’m no expert, but this aluminium silicate blanket seems to be doing a great job. It is indeed a good thermal insulation and ceramic material. If you’ve got something that needs some serious insulation, you might want to give this stuff a try. Just be prepared for a bit of a workout, and maybe get yourself a good pair of gloves!
