Okay, so I’ve always wanted a pizza oven, like a proper, wood-fired one. I’ve seen them on cooking shows, you know, and the pizza just looks amazing. Crispy crust, bubbling cheese… the works. So, I finally decided to build one myself. Seriously, what could go wrong?
First, I looked up a ton of stuff online. Lots of pictures, diagrams, and videos of people building these things. I even found some that looked like something I would build. I have to choose what I am capable of.

Getting Started (And Getting Dirty)
I cleared out a space in my backyard. This involved a lot of, you know, moving rocks and pulling weeds. My back was already sore, and I hadn’t even really started yet! Then I marked out the base area, using some string and stakes. It’s bigger than I thought it would be, honestly.
Next, I laid down a concrete slab. Mixing concrete is hard work, let me tell you. I got it mostly level, though. Close enough, right? I figured the bricks would hide any, uh, imperfections.
Brick by Brick (By Brick…)
This is where things got real. I bought a whole load of firebricks. They’re these special bricks that can handle super high temperatures. Regular bricks would just crack, which would be, you know, bad.
I started laying the bricks for the base, following this dome shape I’d seen online. I used this special mortar, also heat-resistant, to stick them together. It was messy. Very messy. My hands were covered, my clothes were covered… the dog even got some on his tail.
- Building the dome was the trickiest part. I made a sort of wooden frame to support the bricks as I went. It was like building a really, really heavy jigsaw puzzle.
- I slowly added rows of bricks, making sure they were all angled in just right. It took forever.
- I left a hole at the front for the oven door, obviously. And a smaller hole at the top for the chimney.
Almost There!
Once the dome was done, I built a little chimney out of more bricks. Then I covered the whole thing in a layer of this insulating stuff, like a big, warm blanket for the oven. Then another layer of mortar, for looks, mostly. It also helps keep all the heat inside where I can do better cooking.
I let it all dry for a few days. It was hard to wait, I was so excited to try it out!

Pizza Time!
Finally, the big day arrived! I built a fire inside the oven, using some good, dry wood. It took a while to get going, but eventually, the flames were licking up the sides of the dome. The temperature gauge I’d installed (fancy, I know!) was climbing. My anticipation grew exponentially!
I slid my first pizza in – a simple Margherita, because I had to. And… it worked! The crust was crispy, the cheese was melted and golden, and it tasted amazing. Way better than anything I could get from a delivery place.
It was a lot of work, no doubt about it. But totally worth it. Now I can have amazing pizza whenever I want! And, I built it myself. How cool is that?
