Well, let me tell ya somethin’ ’bout bricks. You know, those things, the hard, heavy ones? Yeah, them. Folks use ’em for buildin’ stuff, like houses and walls. Strong stuff, bricks are. You can’t just knock ‘em down easy, no sir. They been around forever, I reckon. My grandpappy used to say, “a good brick wall will stand longer than any of us will”. And he was right, mostly.
Now, I ain’t no fancy builder or nothin’, but I seen enough brick work in my day. They come in different colors, ya know? Red ones, brown ones, even some fancy white ones. But it ain’t the color that matters, it’s the sturdiness. You want a good, solid brick. One that ain’t gonna crumble on ya.
- Red bricks are the most common, I’ve seen. Folks use ‘em everywhere.
- Then there are them brown ones, look kinda earthy.
- White bricks? Those are for the fancy folks, I guess.
I heard some folks sayin’ a person can be a “brick” too. Means they’re dependable, like a good strong wall. You can count on ’em, ya see? That’s a good thing to be, a “brick” person. Someone you can lean on when things get tough. Like that nice Mrs. Henderson down the road, always helpin’ folks out. She’s a real brick, that one.
But then there’s other sayings too. Heard some young fellers talkin’ ’bout “shittin’ a brick”. Now, I don’t know what that’s about exactly, but it sounds like they got awful scared about somethin’. Maybe they saw a snake or somethin’. City folks get scared easy, I tell ya.
And “thick as a brick”? Well, that ain’t so good. That means someone ain’t too bright, if you catch my drift. Like that Billy Joe, bless his heart, he couldn’t figure out how to open a gate even if you gave him a map and a key. Thick as a brick, he is.
There’s also talk about bein’ “built like a brick shithouse.” Now, that’s a funny one. It means someone is strong, real strong, and sturdy. Like that big ol’ farmer, Mr. Johnson. He could lift a whole bale of hay by himself. Built like a brick shithouse, he was. Folks always said he could wrestle a bear and win.
And then there’s the business of bricks bein’ used for, well, not so good things. Heard tell of folks hidin’ things in brick walls, or usin’ ’em for, ahem, certain… substances. But I ain’t gonna talk about that. That’s not the kind of brick talk I do.
Bricks are important, that’s the long and short of it. They keep us safe, they keep us warm, and they keep things standin’ up straight. And sometimes, they can even tell you somethin’ about a person. Are they strong like a brick? Are they dependable like a brick? Or are they… well, you know… thick as a brick? It all depends, I reckon. But one thing’s for sure, bricks ain’t goin’ nowhere. They’ll be around long after I’m gone, and that’s a fact.
So next time ya see a brick, ya just remember all the things it can mean. It ain’t just a hunk of clay, no sir. It’s a whole lot more than that.
