Okay, so today I wanted to figure out how many bricks I needed for this garden wall I’m building. I’ve never done anything like this before, so I was starting from scratch. First, I grabbed a tape measure and headed outside.
I measured the length of where the wall was going to be. Then I measured the height I wanted. I wrote those numbers down on a scrap piece of paper so I wouldn’t forget.

Figuring Out Brick Size
Next, I had to figure out the size of the bricks.I looked around and chose the standard red bricks.
I also had to account for the mortar, that stuff that goes between the bricks. I figured about 3/8 of an inch for that. That’s important because it adds to the overall size of each brick unit, you know?
Doing the Math
Time for some calculations! I converted all my measurements to inches, just to keep things simple. Then I did some dividing and multiplying to find the number of brick for area, figuring the number of bricks for heigth and width.
- Length of wall: measured it, write it down.
- Height of wall: measured it, write it down.
It took a few tries to get the numbers right, I’m not gonna lie. Math isn’t exactly my strong suit. But I double-checked everything, and I think I finally got a good estimate of how many bricks I’ll need.
I’m actually kind of proud of myself for figuring this out! It’s not rocket science, but it’s definitely a practical skill to have. Now I can go to the store and get my supplies. Wish me luck with the actual wall-building part!
