Okay, folks, let’s talk about my latest backyard project – a DIY brick fire pit! I’ve always wanted a cozy spot to gather around on cool evenings, and I figured, “Why not build one myself?” So, I rolled up my sleeves and got to work.
Planning and Prep
First things first, I needed a plan. I spent some time sketching out ideas, looking at pictures online, and figuring out the size and shape I wanted. I decided on a circular design, about four feet in diameter – big enough for a good fire, but not too overwhelming for my yard.

Next, I marked out the area in my backyard with some spray paint. I made sure it was a safe distance from the house, trees, and anything flammable. Safety first, you know?
Digging and Leveling
Then came the fun part – digging! I grabbed my shovel and started removing the grass and topsoil within the marked circle. I dug down about six inches, making sure the base was relatively level. This took a bit of elbow grease, but it was a good workout!
After digging, I added a layer of gravel for drainage. I dumped it in, spread it around, and tamped it down with a hand tamper to create a solid, level foundation. This is super important for the stability of the fire pit.
Laying the Bricks
Now for the bricks! I picked up some standard red bricks from the local hardware store – nothing fancy, just good old-fashioned bricks. I started laying them around the perimeter of the circle, dry-fitting them first to make sure they fit snugly.
- I used a rubber mallet tap the bricks to make them in right place.
- I started laying the bricks.

Once I was happy with the layout, I mixed up some mortar according to the instructions on the bag. I applied a layer of mortar to the gravel base and started setting the bricks in place, one by one. I used a trowel to spread the mortar and a level to make sure everything was straight and even.
Building Up the Walls
I continued laying bricks, row by row, staggering the joints for added strength. This part took some time and patience, but it was really satisfying to see the walls of the fire pit taking shape. I checked the level frequently and made adjustments as needed.

I built the walls up to about three feet high, which felt like a good height for containing the fire and providing a comfortable seating area. You can adjust the height to your preference, of course.
Finishing Touches
Once the mortar was dry, I added a layer of fire bricks to the inside of the pit. These are designed to withstand high temperatures and will help protect the regular bricks from cracking. I carefully placed it in a circular way.
Finally, I cleaned up any excess mortar and let everything cure for a few days. And that’s it! My very own DIY brick fire pit, ready for some marshmallow roasting and good times.
Honestly, it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. It took some effort and a bit of time, but it was totally worth it. Now I have a fantastic fire pit that I built with my own two hands, and that’s a pretty awesome feeling. If I can do it and follow my steps to have the fire pit. I think anyone can have try!
