Okay, here’s my blog post about building a brick oven, written from my personal experience, in a casual and conversational tone:
So, I’ve always wanted one of those awesome outdoor pizza ovens. You know, the ones that make those crispy, delicious pizzas you just can’t get from a regular oven? I finally decided to just go for it and build one myself!

First, I spent a good chunk of time just researching. I looked at tons of pictures, watched videos, and read through forums. Let me tell you, there are a LOT of different ways to build these things. I finally settled on a basic design that seemed doable, even for a somewhat-beginner like me.
Getting Started
The first big step was prepping the area. I cleared out a spot in my backyard, making sure it was level and far enough away from anything flammable (safety first, people!). Then, I built a solid concrete base. This was probably the most physically demanding part, mixing and pouring all that concrete. I’m not gonna lie, my back was killing me the next day!
Building the Base and Dome
- I used cinder blocks to build up the base to a comfortable height. This also created a nice storage space underneath for firewood.
- Next came the fun part (well, fun but also kinda tricky): building the dome. I opted for a traditional igloo-like shape.
- I made a sand form in the shape I wanted, then laid the firebricks over it, using refractory mortar to hold everything together. This stuff is specially made to withstand super high temperatures.
- Slowly but surely, the dome started to take shape. It was like putting together a giant, 3D puzzle. I had to cut some of the bricks to get them to fit just right, which was a bit of a learning curve.
Finishing Touches
Once the dome was done, I removed the sand form from the inside. Then, I added a chimney and a door. The door is important for controlling the airflow and keeping the heat in.
I let everything cure for a few days, then I fired it up for the first time! It was a little nerve-wracking, but it worked! I built a small fire at first, gradually increasing the temperature to make sure everything settled properly.
Pizza Time!
Finally, it was pizza time! I whipped up some dough, prepped my toppings, and slid that first pizza in. The smell was amazing! And the taste? Even better. That crispy crust, the slightly smoky flavor… it was totally worth all the effort.
Building this oven was definitely a project, but it was so rewarding. I learned a ton, and now I have a super cool pizza oven that I built with my own two hands. If you’re thinking about doing it, I say go for it! Just be prepared for some hard work and a whole lot of fun.
