Okay, so I’ve always wanted a nice little outdoor space, and a fireplace was the dream. I finally decided to just go for it and build one myself. I picked a spot in the backyard, kind of off to the side where it wouldn’t be in the way.
Planning and Prep
First things first, I sketched out a rough idea of what I wanted. Nothing fancy, just a simple, classic brick fireplace. Then I measured the area and marked it out with some stakes and string. I also had to check for the position about the underground utilities before starting dig anything.
Next up was digging! I dug out the area for the foundation. I made sure keep the depth about 8 inches deep and a bit wider than the fireplace base I had in mind.
Building the Base
I poured a concrete slab for the foundation. mixing the concrete was a bit of workout. After pouring, I smoothed it out and let it cure for a couple of days. I kept it damp with a hose so it wouldn’t crack.
Laying the Bricks
This was the fun part, but also the most time-consuming. I started laying the bricks, using mortar to hold them together. I made sure to stagger the joints for strength, you know, like they always show in those DIY videos. I used a level constantly to make sure everything was straight. It was slow going, but seeing it take shape was super satisfying!
- Mix the mortar: Not too wet, not too dry.
- Apply the mortar: about 1/2 inch or so for the base.
- Set each brick: Checking the level and alignment.
- Cleaning up: Remove the exceed mortar.
The Firebox
For the firebox, I used firebricks, because they can handle the heat. I followed the same process as the regular bricks, but I was extra careful to make sure everything was perfectly level and square. I also added a metal damper up top, so I could control the airflow.
Finishing Touches
After the firebox, I continued building up the chimney. I kept it simple, just a straight shot up. Once everything was dry, I cleaned off any excess mortar with a wire brush and water.
Finally, I let the whole thing cure for about a week before lighting the first fire. And let me tell you, sitting back and enjoying that first fire in my own handmade fireplace? Best feeling ever!
