Okay, here’s my blog post about building a brick pizza oven, written in a casual, personal style:
So, I’ve always wanted one of those awesome brick pizza ovens you see in fancy backyards. I mean, who doesn’t love a good, crispy pizza? I finally decided to just go for it and build one myself. Let me tell you, it was a project, but totally worth it!

Getting Started
First, I researched the heck out of it. I watched a bunch of videos, read some articles, and basically tried to absorb as much information as I could. It seemed daunting at first, but I figured if I broke it down into steps, I could handle it.
I started by finding a good spot in my backyard. It needed to be away from anything flammable, obviously, and also have enough space around it to work comfortably. Once I had the location, I marked out the area for the base.
The Base
- I dug out the area to make it level. This was probably the most physically demanding part. Lots of shoveling!
- Then, I built a wooden frame for the concrete base. It’s just like when making concrete road.
- Next, I mixed and poured the concrete. I made sure it was nice and thick, because this thing’s gonna be heavy.
- I let the concrete cure for a few days. Patience is key, even though I was itching to get started on the bricks.
Building the Dome
This was the fun part! I got my hands on a ton of firebricks – regular bricks won’t cut it because they can’t handle the heat. Also my friend told me about this. I also bought some fireclay mortar, which is specifically designed for high temperatures.
I started laying the bricks in a circular pattern, slowly building up the walls. I used a simple dome shape, because it seemed the easiest for a first-timer. It was like putting together a giant, 3D puzzle.
With each layer, I carefully checked the level and made sure the bricks were snug. I used a rubber mallet to tap them into place. The mortar was a bit messy to work with, but I got the hang of it after a while.
Finishing Touches
Once the dome was complete, I built a small archway for the oven opening. This took some careful brick cutting, but I managed to make it look pretty decent.

Then, I covered the entire dome with a layer of insulation. This helps to keep the heat in and make the oven more efficient. I used a ceramic fiber blanket, which is like a super-thick, heat-resistant fabric.
Finally, I covered the insulation with a layer of stucco. This gives the oven a nice, finished look and protects the insulation from the elements.
The First Pizza!
After letting everything cure and dry, it was time for the moment of truth: the first pizza! I built a fire inside the oven and let it heat up for a good hour. The temperature gauge I installed was crucial for this.
I slid my pizza in, and within minutes, it was bubbling and golden brown. The crust was perfectly crispy, and the toppings were cooked to perfection. It was seriously the best pizza I’ve ever had!
It is not a easy job,but I did it!
Building this pizza oven was a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience. It took time, effort, and a bit of sweat, but now I have a backyard centerpiece that produces amazing pizza. If you’re thinking about doing it, I say go for it! Just be prepared to get your hands dirty and learn a lot along the way.
