Okay, so I got this little project I’ve been meaning to tackle – building a small wall in my backyard. Nothing fancy, but I wanted to get it right, you know? One of the things I realized early on was that I needed to figure out the whole brick size situation. I mean, who knew there were so many different sizes?
First thing I did was hop online, do a quick search. Found some general info, like how brick dimensions are usually listed as depth by height by length. Learned that these sizes can vary a lot depending on where you are in the world.
But I needed something more specific. So, I started digging deeper, looking for charts and guides. Ended up finding some resources that talked about “standard” brick sizes and how using them can make construction easier. That sounded good to me! I also wanted to make sure I wasn’t spending more than I needed to. A friend of mine suggested to use oversized bricks, which apparently can save you some cash.
I went to the local hardware stores to see the bricks in person. Look at the bricks they had, compare the sizes, and even ask a few questions. I made notes on which sizes I was planning to use, which would be easier, and which would be cheaper.
Common Bricks
After all that, I ended up making my own little chart. It’s not super professional or anything, but it helped me get a better handle on what I was dealing with. Here’s what I came up with:
- Modular Brick: About 3 5/8 x 2 1/4 x 7 5/8 inches. Seemed like a pretty common size, and they fit well together, according to some folks.
- Queen Brick: These were a bit bigger, around 2 3/4 x 2 3/4 x 7 5/8 inches. Thought they might be good for covering more area quickly.
- King Brick: Even bigger, at 2 5/8 x 2 5/8 x 9 5/8 inches.
- Engineer Brick: I also saw these, about 3 5/8 x 2 3/4 x 8 inches. Seemed a bit heftier.
With my chart in hand, I felt a lot more confident about starting my wall project. Still have to figure out the exact number of bricks I need, but at least I’m not totally clueless about the sizes anymore!
Honestly, it was kind of a fun little research project. Who knew bricks could be so interesting? Now, let’s see if I can actually build this wall…
