Okay, so I’ve always wanted a wood-fired oven. I mean, who doesn’t love that smoky, crispy pizza crust? And I’m a pretty handy guy, so I figured, why not build one myself? It turned out to be quite the project, but totally worth it. Here’s how it went down:
The Foundation
First things first, you need a solid base. I cleared a nice spot in my backyard and poured a concrete slab. I made it bigger than I thought I’d need, just to be safe. It is better have larger space than end up to build a smaller one.

The Dome
This is where things got interesting. I used firebricks, because, you know, fire. I built a sand form in the shape of the dome I wanted, then started layering the bricks around it, using refractory mortar to hold them together. Man, that mortar is sticky stuff! It took a while, and my back was definitely feeling it, but slowly but surely, the dome started to take shape.
My arms and hands are starting feel sore.
The Doorway
I left an opening for the door, of course. Had to get the pizzas in and out somehow! I used some extra bricks to create an archway, which looked pretty cool, if I do say so myself. And I am so pround of myself.
Insulation
Once the dome was done, I covered the whole thing in ceramic fiber blanket. This is super important for keeping the heat in. Then, I added a layer of chicken wire, and covered that with a thick layer of stucco. The oven was starting to look like a giant, white igloo in my backyard!
The Chimney
I built a small chimney out of some leftover firebricks. This helps with the airflow and lets the smoke escape. I wasn’t sure about the exact placement at first, but I figured it out as I went. Trial and error, my friends.
Curing the Oven
This part took some patience. I had to let the oven dry and cure slowly. I started with small fires and gradually increased the temperature over a few days. This prevents cracking and ensures the oven is strong and ready to go.

First Pizza!
Finally, the moment of truth! I fired up the oven, let it get screaming hot, and slid in my first homemade pizza. The smell was amazing! And the taste? Even better. Crispy crust, perfectly melted cheese, and that unmistakable wood-fired flavor. It was a total success!
Building this oven was a challenge, no doubt about it. There were times when I wanted to throw in the towel. But seeing it finished, and tasting that first pizza, made it all worthwhile. Now, I’m firing up pizzas, bread, even roasted veggies. It’s like having a little piece of Italy in my backyard. If you’re thinking about building one, go for it!
