Okay, so I’ve always wanted a fire pit in my backyard. You know, somewhere to chill with friends, roast marshmallows, and just enjoy the evenings. I looked at some pre-made ones, but they were either too expensive or just didn’t fit the vibe I was going for. So, I thought, “Why not build one myself?” And that’s how this whole brick fire pit project started.
Gathering Supplies
First things first, I needed to get my hands on some materials. I went with regular old bricks – the kind you use for, well, building walls and stuff. Figured they could handle the heat, and they were pretty cheap at the local hardware store. I grabbed about a hundred of them, just to be safe. I also picked up some sand and gravel for the base, and a metal ring to keep the fire contained. It might not necessary and just a waste of my money, but, you know, better to be safe.

Prepping the Ground
Next up, I had to find the perfect spot in my yard. I wanted it far enough from the house and any trees, for obvious safety reasons. Once I picked the location, I marked out a circle – about four feet in diameter. I used a stake and some string to get a nice, even circle. Then, I started digging! I went down about six inches, removing all the grass and loose dirt. It was a bit of a workout, I won’t lie.
Laying the Base
With the hole dug, I poured in a layer of gravel, about two inches thick. This was to help with drainage. Then, I added a layer of sand on top of that, another two inches or so. I used a level to make sure everything was nice and even. This was going to be the foundation for my fire pit, so I wanted it to be solid.
Building the Walls
Now for the fun part – actually building the fire pit! I started laying the bricks in a circle, following the outline I’d marked earlier. I didn’t use any mortar or anything; I just dry-stacked them. I figured the weight of the bricks would keep everything in place. Plus, it made it easier to adjust things if needed. I built up the walls layer by layer, overlapping the bricks like you would when building a regular wall. I went up about four layers, which seemed like a good height.
Putting Things in Order
I put the metal ring in the center that I bought earlier.
Enjoying the Fire
And that was it! My very own DIY brick fire pit. I let everything settle for a day or two, and then it was time for the inaugural fire. I piled in some wood, lit it up, and boom – instant backyard bliss. We roasted some hot dogs, told some stories, and just enjoyed the warmth of the fire. It was exactly what I had envisioned.

Honestly, the whole project was way easier than I thought it would be. It took a weekend, some basic tools, and a bit of elbow grease. But the result? Totally worth it. If you’re thinking about building your own fire pit, I say go for it! It’s a great way to add some character to your backyard and create a gathering spot for friends and family.
