Okay, so I’ve always wanted a proper grill in my backyard. I mean, who doesn’t love a good barbeque? But those fancy, store-bought ones? Way too expensive. So, I thought, “Hey, I can build one myself!” And that’s how my barbeque brick grill adventure began.
First, I gathered all my stuff. I needed a bunch of bricks – I think I got like, 100 or so? You can use old ones, new ones, whatever you got. Also needed some mortar mix, that’s like the glue that holds the bricks together. And, of course, a grill grate. I found one at a hardware store that fit the size I was going for.

The Build
I started by laying out the base. I just put the bricks down on the ground in a rectangle shape, making sure it was level. This was going to be the foundation for the whole thing, so it had to be good.
- First layer: I mixed up the mortar – it’s like making cement, but messier! – and started spreading it on the ground where the bricks were going to go. Then I put down the first layer of bricks, pressing them into the mortar.
- Building up: I just kept adding layers, spreading mortar between each one. It’s kind of like building with giant LEGOs, but way heavier. I made sure to stagger the bricks, like, not putting one directly on top of the other, so it would be stronger.
- Grill time: When I got to the height I wanted for the cooking surface, I left some spaces for the grill grate to sit on. It’s like little ledges built into the brick walls.
- Top it off: after set grate,I build some bricks around it.
After all the bricks were in place, I let the mortar dry for a couple of days. It needs time to get all hard and strong. This was the hardest part – waiting! I was so eager to fire it up.
Finally, it was ready! I put the grill grate in place, loaded it up with charcoal, and fired that baby up! The first thing I cooked was some burgers, and man, they were delicious. There’s just something about cooking over a grill you built yourself that makes the food taste even better.
It’s not perfect, my brick grill. It’s a little wonky in places, and the mortar isn’t perfectly smooth. But you know what? It works! And I built it with my own two hands. That’s a pretty good feeling. Plus, now I can have barbeques whenever I want. Win-win!
