Okay, folks, gather ’round! Today, I’m gonna tell ya about my little adventure building a pizza oven in my backyard. Now, I ain’t no professional bricklayer, but I’m pretty handy, and I love a good challenge. Plus, who doesn’t love homemade pizza, right?
First thing I did, I researched a lot. I mean, a lot. You wouldn’t believe how many different opinions there are on what kind of bricks to use for an oven. I learned that there are these things called “high duty” and “super duty” firebricks. I guess those are even better for ovens. But honestly, they sounded a bit too fancy for my little project, and probably pricey too. I was thinking, there has to be a middle ground, right?
Then I saw some folks talking about regular clay bricks. Some said they’re no good, some said they’re fine. After digging deeper, I found out that the important thing is that the bricks are fired, not cured. Cured bricks still have water in ’em, and that can cause problems when you heat ’em up. They can crack or even explode! No, thank you!
So, I went down to my local hardware store and started looking at bricks. The guy there, he was super helpful. He showed me these firebricks they had. They were heavier than regular bricks and had a different texture. He told me they’re made for high heat, y’know? They don’t crack or break when they get hot. That sounded exactly like what I needed!
I bought a whole bunch of those firebricks. They were a bit more expensive than regular bricks, but not as expensive as those “super duty” ones I saw online. I figured, it’s better to spend a little more now and have an oven that lasts, rather than cheap out and have to rebuild the whole thing later.
- Choosing the bricks: I went with firebricks.
- Why firebricks?: They’re made for high heat and won’t crack.
- Where to buy: I got mine from the local hardware store.
Building the oven, well, that’s a story for another day. But let me tell you, using those firebricks was the right decision. They’re made for heat, they last, and they give you that perfect oven floor for bakin’ pizzas that’ll have everyone comin’ back for seconds. So don’t skimp on the bricks if you’re building an oven. Trust me on this one!
Stay tuned for more updates on my pizza oven project! I’ll share more about the building process and, of course, the first pizza I bake in it! It’s gonna be epic!
