Alright, let’s talk about this here… what do you call it? Brick wall sculpture, yeah, that’s it. You know, them things they stick on the walls, made of bricks. Not like the walls of my old house, mind you, them were just plain bricks, keeping the wind out. These here brick sculptures, they’re fancy, like.
I saw one down in Sugarcreek once. They said it told a story ’bout the towns around here, Baltic, Dundee, and all them. Said it showed the folks and what happened way back when. Don’t ask me what it all meant, too many little details for my old eyes. But it was somethin’ to look at, for sure. Took ’em a long time to make it, I bet. All them bricks, stuck together just so.
They call it art, you know. Like them paintings they have in museums. But this ain’t no paintin’, this is solid stuff. Bricks! Heavy ones too, I reckon. Probably need a strong fella to put them up on the wall. Not like me, I can barely lift a bucket of water these days.
Some folks, they make patterns with bricks, even on the ground. For patios and such. They call it a brick bond, or somethin’ fancy like that. It’s all the same to me, bricks is bricks. But I gotta say, some of them patterns is pretty. Makes the ground look all nice and tidy.
- You got your straight patterns, like a wall.
- Then you got them swirly ones, makes you dizzy lookin’ at ’em.
- And some that look like baskets, all woven together.
I seen pictures too, black and white ones, look real good against a brick wall. Makes ’em pop, you know? Like them old movie stars, all dramatic like. You could put up a whole bunch of ’em, make a whole wall of pictures. That’d be somethin’ to see. Though, I prefer pictures of my grandbabies, myself.
This here contemporary wall sculpture, they say it’s new-fangled art. Modern, they call it. You can see it in them fancy art places, galleries they call ’em. Sometimes they call it relief art too. All them big words just to say it sticks out from the wall, not flat like a picture. I tell you, city folk, they sure do like to complicate things.
Now, the one in Sugarcreek, that was put up by the town folks, the arts council or somethin’. They wanted to show off the history of the place. And I guess it worked, people come from all over to look at it. Take pictures and such. It’s even on that Tripadvisor thing, my grandson showed me. Ranked number seven, whatever that means. It’s on Broadway Street, if you ever wanna see it. Number 44681, that’s the… what do you call it? Zip code, yeah.
Seems like a lot of work to me, all that brick layin’. But I guess if folks like it, it’s worth it. Gives ’em somethin’ to talk about, somethin’ to look at. And it keeps them bricks outta the landfill, I reckon. Always gotta look at the bright side, that’s what I say.
So, next time you see a brick wall, don’t just think of it as a wall. Think of it as a canvas, maybe. Or a story waiting to be told. You could even stick some pictures on it, make your own art. Just make sure them bricks is sturdy, you don’t want it all comin’ down on your head now, do ya? And that’s all I got to say about these here brick wall sculptures. They’re somethin’ alright.
