Okay, so I’ve been messing around with colors for my latest project, and I wanted to get this specific shade – fire brick red. It’s not just red, you know? It’s got that deeper, richer tone. Here’s how I went about figuring it out.
My Little Experiment
First, I started with just plain red. Like, the basic, bright red you’d get straight out of a paint tube or the default red in any program. Too bright. Too…basic.

Then, I thought, “Okay, it needs to be darker.” So, I started mixing in a little bit of black. Just a tiny drop at a time. I’m talking, like, barely a speck! You add too much black, and boom, you’ve got muddy brown or something way too dark.
- Start with basic red.
- Add a tiny bit of black.
- Mix it really, really well.
I kept doing this, little by little, and checking the color. It was getting closer, but it still wasn’t quite fire brick. It was missing something… a certain warmth.
So then I thought, “Maybe a touch of brown?” Not a lot, just enough to warm it up without making it look muddy. Again, tiny, tiny amounts. I literally used the tip of a toothpick to add the brown paint.
I mixed everything up really good, making sure there were no streaks or anything. And slowly but surely, it started to look right! That fire brick red started to come through.
The key, I realized, is patience. It’s all about those tiny adjustments. And honestly, a lot of eyeballing it. There’s no magic formula, you just gotta keep tweaking until it looks right to you.
Finally I got that perfect fire brick red colour!
