Okay, folks, let’s talk about replacing the firebricks in a fireplace insert. I did this recently, and man, was it a learning experience!
First, I noticed some cracks in the firebricks at the back of my fireplace insert. Nothing major, but enough to make me worry about safety and efficiency. You know, you don’t want heat escaping where it shouldn’t!

Getting Started
So, I figured I’d tackle this myself. How hard could it be, right? Famous last words. I started by taking everything out of the fireplace. Grates, ash, everything. It was a dirty job, I’m not gonna lie. I wore gloves and a mask because that ash gets everywhere.
Taking Stock
Once it was all clean,I really looked and then I got a good look at the firebricks. Some were just cracked, but a couple were really crumbling. Definitely time for a replacement.
The Removal Process
- I tried gently tapping the bricks with a rubber mallet first. Didn’t budge.
- Then, I used a hammer and a wide chisel, being careful not to damage the surrounding metal of the insert. It took some work, but I slowly started to loosen them.
- It was a puzzle, really. Some bricks came out easily, others were stubborn. I just kept at it, working my way around.
- Finally got all the old bricks * a mess!
Installing the New Bricks
I bought universal replacement firebricks from the local hardware store. They weren’t exactly the same size, but the guy there assured me they’d work, I just might need to cut some.
Measuring and cutting. Yep, I had to cut a few. I used a masonry saw, which created a huge cloud of dust (mask definitely required!).

-
I dry-fitted all the bricks first, making sure everything lined up before committing.
-
It’s kind like tetris, making all shapes fit each other.
-
Then, I carefully put them in place.
Finishing Up
I let everything sit for a day, just to be sure. And that was it! Fireplace insert looking good as new. It wasn’t the easiest DIY project I’ve ever done, but it was definitely satisfying. And I saved some money doing it myself!
My advice? Take your time, be patient, and don’t be afraid to get a little dirty. It’s totally doable!
