Alright, let’s gab about why them houses ain’t made outta brick no more. You know, back in the day, seems like everything was brick. Strong stuff, that brick. But now? Eh, not so much.
First off, it’s all ’bout the money, honey. Brick? That stuff’s expensive! Way more than wood or that plastic-y siding they slap on houses now. It ain’t just the bricks themselves, it’s the work too. Gotta lay them bricks just right, one by one, with that cement stuff. Takes time, and time is money, they say.
Then there’s the wood. Seems like there’s wood everywhere you look, ‘specially ’round here. Easy to get, easy to build with. So, why bother with brick when you got all that wood? Makes sense, I guess, if you’re lookin’ to save a few pennies.
And rocks! Some places got rocks all over, not the brick kind, mind you. Hard, stubborn rocks that don’t build nothin’ easy. Up north, they got that granite stuff. Pretty, but not for houses, no sir.
- Money’s tight
- Wood’s easy to get
- Some places got too many rocks, but not the right kind
Used to be different, though. Way back when, ‘fore you was born, and ‘fore me too, likely, folks built with brick all the time. Big ol’ buildings, even them pyramids and that China wall, all brick. But things changed, they always do.
After that big war, the one with all the fightin’ overseas, folks started buildin’ different. Wanted somethin’ new, somethin’ fast, I reckon. Brick just wasn’t the style no more. City folks wanted houses that looked different from the country, and the rules for buildin’ changed too. Brick wasn’t a must-have anymore.
Now, you see a house that looks like brick, chances are it ain’t. It’s just got a thin layer of brick on the outside, like a pretty dress over a plain ol’ body. Looks fancy, but it ain’t the real deal. They call it veneer, or somethin’ like that. Fool ya, it does.
So, there you have it. Brick’s too pricey, wood’s too easy, and folks just want somethin’ different now. Times change, and houses change with ’em. Me? I still like a good brick house. Solid, dependable, like a good pair of shoes. But what do I know? I’m just an old woman talkin’.
You know, they say them brick houses are good for keeping the heat in durin’ winter and keepin’ it cool durin’ summer. Makes ya wonder why more folks don’t use it still. But I guess those builders know best, even if it doesn’t always make sense to us regular folk. I mean, you want somethin’ that’s gonna last, somethin’ that’ll keep your family safe and warm, wouldn’t ya think brick would do the trick?
Anyway, it ain’t my place to say. I just see how things are, and I tell it like it is. No fancy words, no big city talk. Just plain truth, the way I see it. And the way I see it, brick’s gone outta style, and that’s that. Maybe it’ll come back one day, maybe it won’t. Who knows? Only time will tell, like it always does.
But I’ll tell ya what, a good brick house, that’s somethin’ special. Somethin’ to be proud of. Shame they don’t make ’em like they used to. But that’s the way of the world, I guess. Always changin’, always movin’ on. And us old folks, we just gotta keep up, or get left behind. And I ain’t ready to get left behind just yet, no sirree.
