Okay, so I decided to build a fire pit in my backyard. I’ve always wanted one, and after a particularly chilly evening, I thought, “It’s time!” The first big question was: what kind of bricks should I use? Regular ones? Nope, gotta be fire-resistant.
Picking the Right Bricks
I started by looking up with some information. I didn’t want the bricks exploding on me after all the work! Some folks online talked about using regular clay bricks, but more people were saying that’s a bad idea. They can crack or even burst from the heat.

So, firebricks it was. I looked around my area, I found I could buy a whole bunch of them. They looked heavier and denser, which, made sense, as I understood.
The Building Process
First, I cleared a nice, level spot in the yard. I didn’t want a wonky fire pit. Then, I laid out the first layer of bricks in a circle, just to get a feel for the size. I used a few for testing.
Next, I started stacking, this is very important for the fire pit to become stable and good for the fire.
I wanted to make sure everything looked right, so I also used a leveler, so I kept checking the level as I went. It took a bit of wiggling and adjusting, but finally, I had a solid, level fire pit.
- Clear a level area.
- Lay out the bricks in a circle.
- Stack them carefully.
- check frequently!
The First Fire!
After letting it dry completely (I waited a couple of days, just to be safe), it was time for the first fire! I gathered some dry wood, arranged it in a teepee shape inside the pit, and lit it up. The bricks held up perfectly! No cracking, no popping, just a nice, warm fire. Success!
It’s been a few weeks now, and I’ve used the fire pit several times. Those firebricks were definitely the right choice. It feels great to sit around the fire, knowing I built it myself, and it’s built to last.
