Okay, here’s my blog post about building a fire pit out of bricks, written from my personal experience:
So, I’ve always wanted a fire pit in my backyard. You know, somewhere to chill with friends, roast some marshmallows, and just enjoy the outdoors. I finally decided to stop dreaming and start doing! I’m no expert, but I figured, how hard could it be to stack some bricks in a circle? Turns out, it’s a bit more involved than that, but still totally doable.

Planning and Prep
First things first, I picked a spot. I wanted it away from the house, trees, and anything that could catch fire. Safety first, people! I also checked with my local authorities about any rules or permits needed. Don’t want any trouble with the law.
Next, I gathered my materials. I went with regular old bricks ’cause they’re cheap and fire-resistant. I also grabbed some gravel for drainage and some sand to level things out. Oh, and a shovel, a level, and a tamper – those were essential.
Laying the Foundation
I started by digging a shallow pit, maybe about 6 inches deep and a bit wider than I wanted the final fire pit to be. Then, I dumped in the gravel and spread it around evenly. This is super important for drainage – you don’t want water pooling up in your fire pit.
After the gravel, I added a layer of sand. This helped me create a nice, level base for the bricks. I used the level to make sure everything was even. It took some fiddling, but I got there.
Building the Walls
Now for the fun part – stacking the bricks! I started laying the first layer in a circle, using the sand to make any minor adjustments to keep them level. I didn’t use any mortar or anything; I just wanted a simple, rustic look.
- First Layer: Make it a perfect circle, use level tool.
- Second Layer: Offset the bricks to make stronger.
For the second layer, I offset the bricks, like you see in a regular brick wall. This makes the whole thing more stable. I kept going, layer by layer, until the fire pit was the height I wanted – about three layers of bricks seemed good.

Finishing Touches
Once the walls were done, I tamped down the soil around the outside of the fire pit to make it look nice and * that is,all my work is done!
Honestly, it was a pretty satisfying project. It took a bit of effort, but it wasn’t rocket science. Now I’ve got a sweet fire pit to enjoy, and I can proudly say, “I built that!” If I can do it, you can too. Just take your time, be safe, and have fun!
