Alright, let’s talk about this here… what do you call it? “Brick wall baseboard,” yeah, that’s it. Fancy name for somethin’ that ain’t so fancy, ya know? Now, I ain’t no expert, but I’ve seen a thing or two in my day, and I can tell ya, brick walls and baseboards, they sometimes get along, sometimes they don’t.
First off, if your bricks go all the way down to the floor, like some of them old houses do, do you really need that baseboard thingy? Seems like a waste of time and money to me. I mean, if the wall’s already there, what’s the point, right? My old house, it didn’t have none of that fancy stuff, just plain brick, and it stood strong for years. But, mind you, some folks like things pretty, so they put ’em in anyways. To each their own, I say.
Now, if you do decide you want a baseboard, or maybe you gotta have one for some reason, then you gotta be careful. You can’t just go hammerin’ nails into a brick wall like you’re fixin’ a fence post. That brick, it ain’t gonna like that. It’ll crack and crumble, and then you’ll have a real mess on your hands. I heard tell there are special nails and things for brick, but even those can cause trouble. Weakens the wall, they say. And nobody wants a weak wall, that’s for sure.
- So, what do you do? Well, some folks, they use glue. Just slap some glue on the back of that baseboard and stick it to the wall. Sounds easy enough, but you gotta make sure that glue is good and strong. You don’t want that baseboard fallin’ off the wall the first time you bump into it. And you gotta hold it there for a while, too, until the glue sets. Patience is key, like my grandma always said.
- And then there’s them fake brick walls. You know, the ones that look like brick but ain’t really brick. Those are a whole ‘nother story. They’re easier to deal with, I reckon. You can probably use nails or screws without worryin’ too much about crackin’ the wall. But, they ain’t as sturdy as the real thing, that’s for sure. It’s like them store-bought tomatoes, they look pretty but don’t taste like nothin’.
Anyways, back to this baseboard business. If you’re puttin’ in one of them vinyl ones, the kind that looks like plastic, you gotta be extra careful. That stuff can warp and bend if you don’t install it right. And if it don’t look good, then what’s the point? Might as well just leave the wall bare. My neighbor, she put in some of that vinyl stuff, and it looked alright at first, but then the sun hit it, and it started to buckle and twist. Looked like a snake slitherin’ along the wall. Not a pretty sight, let me tell ya.
So, whether you need a baseboard on your brick wall, well, that depends. If the brick goes all the way to the floor, maybe not. If you gotta have one, be careful how you attach it. Glue might be your best bet, unless it’s one of them pretend brick walls, then you got more options. And make sure you pick the right material, somethin’ that’ll last and won’t give you no trouble. That’s my two cents, take it or leave it.
And one more thing, always measure twice, cut once. That’s what my husband used to say, rest his soul. He was a carpenter, you see, knew a thing or two about buildin’ stuff. He would’ve laughed at all these fancy tools and materials they got now. Back in his day, it was all about good ol’ wood and nails, and a whole lot of elbow grease. But times change, I guess, and you gotta keep up, even if you’re an old woman like me.
So, there you have it. My thoughts on brick wall baseboards. Not much, maybe, but it’s honest. And that’s more than you can say for some folks these days.
