Okay, so I needed to install fire bricks in my wood stove. I’ve never done this before, so I was a bit nervous, but it turned out to be easier than I thought.
Getting Started
First, I gathered all my materials. I already had the fire bricks, which I bought online. I also needed a tape measure, a marker, some work gloves, and of course, the wood stove itself. Oh, and a shop vac, ’cause this can get messy. Make sure the stove is completely cool. Don’t want any burns.

Measuring and Marking
Next, I measured the inside of the wood stove where the bricks would go. There’s a bottom, back, and sides. I measured each of those areas. Using the measurements, I marked on the fire bricks where I’d need to cut them to fit. Some folks use a straight edge for marking, but I just eyeballed it. The bricks were surprisingly easy to mark with a regular marker.
Cutting the Bricks
Now, this was the part I was worried about, but it was fine. I wore my work gloves and carefully scored along the marked lines with a masonry saw. Some people use a chisel and hammer, but I found the saw to be easier. The thing to remember is not to force it. Just go slow and steady. After scoring, I gently tapped the brick along the line with a hammer, and it snapped right off. Not every break was clean, but it’s the inside of a wood stove, so it’s not like it has to be perfect.
Placing the Bricks
Once all the bricks were cut to the right sizes, I started placing them in the stove. I started with the bottom, then the back, and finally the sides. The first brick I tried to put on the bottom was too big, which was a bummer, so I had to do some more cutting. The side bricks were a little tricky because they had to lean against the back ones. I just kind of wedged them in there, and they stayed put. It wasn’t the prettiest job, but they were all in.
Cleaning Up
After all the bricks were in, I used the shop vac to clean up all the dust and debris. There was a lot! I also wiped down the outside of the stove just to make it look nice. And that was it! I let everything air out for a while, and the next day, I built a fire. It worked great, and the new fire bricks really seemed to help the stove burn more efficiently. This was super important to me because it’s been cold, and I need the stove to work well.
So, yeah, that’s how I installed fire bricks in my wood stove. Not too bad for a first-timer! If you’re thinking of doing it yourself, just take your time, be careful, and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. The whole thing took me a couple of hours, but I also took breaks. Now, I’m ready for some cozy fires this winter.
- Gather materials.
- Measure inside of the stove and mark bricks.
- Carefully cut the bricks.
- Place the bricks inside the stove.
- Clean up the dust and debris.
It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. I’m pretty proud of myself for getting it done.
