Okay, folks, let’s get dirty and build ourselves a fire pit! I’ve always wanted a cozy spot in my backyard for chilly evenings, and I finally decided to just go for it. Here’s how I made a fire pit out of bricks, and trust me, if I can do it, you can too.
Planning and Gathering
First things first, I needed a plan. I didn’t want anything fancy, just a simple, round pit. I sketched out a rough circle on a piece of paper – seriously, it was super basic. Then, I picked a spot in my yard. I made sure it was away from any low-hanging branches or anything flammable. Safety first, people!

Next up, materials. I needed:
- Bricks (I used regular old red bricks, nothing special)
- A shovel
- A tamper (or something heavy to flatten the ground)
- Some gravel (for drainage)
- sand
Digging and Prepping
With my spot chosen, I started digging. I used my shovel to outline a circle, roughly the size I wanted my fire pit to be. Then, I dug down about six inches. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a hole!
Next, I used the tamper to flatten the bottom of the hole. I just stomped around on it until it felt pretty solid. If you don’t have a tamper, you could use a heavy piece of wood or even just your feet (wear sturdy shoes!).
I then poured a layer of gravel into the bottom of the hole, and adding a layer of sand on the top of gravel. This is for drainage, so water doesn’t pool up in your fire pit and make a muddy mess. I spread it out evenly with my shovel.
Building the Walls
Now for the fun part! I started laying the bricks around the edge of the hole, forming the first layer of the fire pit wall. I didn’t use any mortar or anything, just stacked them tightly together. It’s like building with giant LEGOs!
I kept adding layers of bricks, staggering them like you would in a regular wall. This makes it stronger. I went up about four layers high, which seemed like a good height to contain the fire without being too tall.

The Finishing Touches
And done! Now I have my fire pit,and I built my first fire in my new fire pit! It was awesome. I roasted some marshmallows, sat back, and enjoyed the warmth.
This was a super simple project, and it only took me an afternoon. Now I have a great spot to hang out with friends and family, all thanks to a little bit of digging and some strategically placed bricks. Give it a try – you might surprise yourself!
