Okay, here’s my blog post about replacing fire bricks in my wood stove:
So, the other day I noticed a couple of cracked fire bricks in my trusty old wood stove. Nothing major, but I knew I needed to take care of it before it got worse and started affecting the stove’s efficiency (or worse, became a safety hazard!). I’ve never done this before, so I was a little nervous.

Getting Started
First things first, I let the stove cool down completely. Like, overnight cool. No way I was sticking my hand in there while it was even remotely warm. Safety first, people!
Next, I gathered my tools. I had:
- New fire bricks (obviously). I’d purchased it.
- A sturdy scraper
- A wire brush
- A shop vac (gotta keep things tidy!)
- Gloves (because fire bricks are rough)
- Safety glasses (dust and debris – no thanks!)
Out with the Old
With everything ready, I put on my gloves and safety glasses and opened the stove door. I took a good look at the cracked bricks to see how they were positioned. Some were just sitting there, while others were wedged in pretty tight.
I started with the easy ones. I carefully pulled them out, setting them aside. For the tighter ones, I used the scraper to gently pry them loose. I was careful not to force anything, as I didn’t want to damage the surrounding bricks or the stove itself.
Once all the old bricks were out, I used the wire brush to scrub away any loose ash or debris from the inside of the stove. Then, I fired up the shop vac and sucked up all the mess. It’s amazing how much ash can accumulate in there!
In with the New
I grabbed the new fire bricks. I test-fitted a couple to make sure they fit snugly.

I started placing the new bricks in, following the pattern of the old ones. It was a bit like putting together a puzzle. Some slid right in, while others needed a little gentle tapping with the scraper handle to get them into place.
All Done!
Once all the new bricks were in, I stood back and admired my work. It looked pretty good, if I do say so myself! I gave everything a final once-over to make sure the bricks were seated properly and there were no gaps.
And that’s it! Not as hard as I thought it would be. Now my wood stove is ready for another season of cozy fires. It is very fulfilling!
