Okay, so I’ve always wanted a fireplace, but the whole traditional chimney thing? Way too much hassle. Then I stumbled upon this brick arch fireplace idea, and I was like, “Yep, that’s the one!” It looked rustic and cozy, and I figured I could probably handle it myself. Spoiler alert: I did, and it turned out awesome!
First things first, I gathered all my materials. I’m talking bricks – I went for a slightly weathered look, nothing too perfect – mortar mix, a trowel, a level, a rubber mallet, some wooden supports for the arch, and a whole lot of patience. Oh, and safety glasses! Gotta protect those peepers.

Building the Base
I started by marking out the fireplace area on the floor and laying down the first layer of bricks. It was pretty straightforward, just making sure everything was level and square. I used a simple running bond pattern – you know, where each row of bricks is offset by half a brick. Makes it look nice and sturdy.
Creating the Arch
This was the tricky part, but also the most fun. I built a wooden frame to support the arch while the mortar dried. I cut the wood into the shape I wanted the arch to be, and then temporarily screwed it together.
Then, I carefully started laying bricks over the frame, using plenty of mortar to keep them in place. This part took some finesse, and the rubber mallet was my best friend for gently tapping the bricks into the perfect position.
Setting the Bricks
Once I had the basic arch shape,I continued with the bricks up the sides, kind of like building two little walls that met at the arch. Making sure those side bricks lined up with the arch bricks was key for the whole thing to look cohesive.

Letting it Dry
This was the hardest part – waiting! I had to let the mortar dry completely before I could remove the wooden support frame. It took a couple of days, and I kept checking on it like a nervous parent. I sprayed some water.
Finishing Touches
After what felt like forever, the mortar was solid. I carefully removed the wooden frame, and there it was – my beautiful brick arch! I cleaned up any excess mortar with a damp sponge and then stepped back to admire my handiwork.
I mean, it’s not perfect. There are a few little imperfections here and there, but that’s part of the charm, right? It looks like something I actually made, not something I bought from a store. And the best part? Now I have a cozy, rustic fireplace to enjoy on chilly evenings. Totally worth the effort!
