So, I decided to get all DIY and build a pizza oven in my backyard. I’ve always loved those wood-fired pizzas, you know? The crispy crust, the smoky flavor… I figured, why not try making my own?

First things first, I needed a plan. I did some digging. Basically found some rough sketches, and I’m not gonna lie, it felt a bit overwhelming at first. But hey, I’m stubborn, so I pushed through.
Getting the Materials
The heart of the oven, obviously, is the firebricks. I had to get actual firebricks, not just regular ones. These suckers can handle crazy high temperatures without cracking or anything.
- Firebricks: I grabbed a whole bunch from a local building supply place. They were heavier than I expected!
- Mortar: Got this special refractory mortar that’s also designed for high heat.
- Other Stuff: Sand, gravel, regular bricks for the base, a shovel, a trowel, a level… you get the idea. A whole mess of tools and materials.
Building the Base
I started by clearing a spot in the yard and laying down a foundation of gravel and sand. Then, I built a simple base out of regular bricks. This part wasn’t super exciting, but it had to be level and solid, or the whole oven would be wonky.
I use simple cement to build a strong base and make sure everthing is stable.
Building the Dome
This is where things got tricky. I started laying the firebricks in a circular pattern, slowly building up the walls. I used the refractory mortar to stick them together. It was like a giant, heavy puzzle.
The key, I found, was to take it slow and steady. I’d lay a few bricks, check the level, make adjustments, and then let it set for a bit before adding more. I messed up a few times, had to knock some bricks loose and redo them, but eventually, it started to look like an actual dome!

I even fashioned a little archway for the oven opening. It’s not perfect, a little crooked, but I’m kind of proud of it.
The First Fire!
After letting the mortar cure for a few days(read the box, seriously), it was time for the moment of truth. I built a small fire inside the oven, gradually increasing the heat. I was nervous, I am not a pro at all! I kept checking for cracks, making sure everything was holding up.
And… it worked! The oven got super hot, and the heat radiated beautifully. I even cooked a test pizza in there. It wasn’t the prettiest pizza I’ve ever made, but it tasted amazing. That smoky flavor, that crispy crust… it was all worth it.
It’s not perfect, my oven. It’s got some rough edges, and I’m sure a professional builder would laugh at it. But I built it with my own two hands, and that’s a pretty good feeling. Plus, now I can make awesome pizza whenever I want. Win-win!
