Alright, so I set out on this little project, right? Needed some refractory bricks for this pizza oven I’m building. Yeah, I know, sounds fancy, but it’s just your regular backyard type deal. Anyway, I needed these special bricks, the kind that can handle the heat, you know?
First off, I had to figure out what these things were even called. Some folks call ’em fire bricks, others say refractory bricks. Whatever they’re called, I just knew they were different from the regular bricks I used to build my garden wall. These are yellowish-white, not red, and they feel different, tougher.
So, I start looking around, asking my neighbors, checking out the local hardware stores. Nobody seemed to have a clue what I was talking about. I mean, they knew about bricks, but not these “heat-resistant” ones. Turns out, finding refractory bricks ain’t as easy as picking up a bag of cement.
After a bit of digging, I found out there are different types of these bricks. Bauxite, Magnetite, and Dolomite – sounds like something out of a science fiction movie, right? But apparently, they all have different uses. Like, the Dolomite ones can handle temperatures up to 1600 degrees! That’s like, hotter than a volcano, or so I imagine.
Then came the price. Oh boy, these bricks ain’t cheap. I learned that the better the quality, the higher the price. Makes sense, I guess. The purer the stuff they make these bricks from, the more it’s gonna cost. It’s like buying organic veggies versus the regular ones.
Now, where to find these things? That was the real challenge. I heard about this place, Louisville Fire Brick, that’s been making them for over a hundred years. So I thought to myself “that was a good idea!” But, they’re a bit far from me. I needed something closer, “refractory brick near me,” you know?

First Try: Local Stores
-
Second Try: Asking Around
-
Third Try: Online Search
I hit up all the local hardware and building supply stores. Nada. Zilch. The folks there looked at me like I had two heads when I asked for refractory bricks.
Next, I asked around the neighborhood. My buddy, who’s a bit of a DIY enthusiast himself, suggested I look up some specialized suppliers.
So, I hopped online, started searching. Found some suppliers, but most were either too far or too expensive. And who knows if those online people can deliver those bricks to my place or not.
Finally, I stumbled upon a place that’s not too far, and it seems like they know their stuff. I’m going to check them out, but man, it has been quite the adventure just to find some bricks that can handle a bit of heat. I’ll keep you all posted on how the pizza oven turns out. Wish me luck!
