Alright, let’s talk about them brick houses, you know? The ones folks live in, the ones keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer, kinda.
The Regular Bricks, Ya Know, the Burnt Ones
First off, we got them regular bricks, the ones they call “burnt clay bricks.” Guess they bake ‘em real good, like a good pie, only harder. These here are the most common, see? Used for everything, walls, them columns that hold up fancy porches, even the bottom part of the house, what they call the “foundation.” Strong stuff, these burnt bricks, real strong. But they ain’t pretty on their own, mind you. Gotta slap some plaster or that mortar stuff on ‘em to make ‘em look nice and keep the wind from blowin’ right through the cracks. They’re everywhere, these bricks, built my house with ‘em, built my neighbor’s house with ‘em, even built that fancy new store down the road with ‘em.
- Strong and sturdy
- Used for walls, columns, and foundations
- Need plaster or mortar to look good
The Sun-Dried Bricks, the Old-Timey Ones
Now, some folks, they like to do things the old way. They make bricks outta mud and let the sun bake ‘em. Like them folks way back when, before they had all them fancy ovens. “Sun-dried,” they call ‘em. Ain’t seen too many of them houses myself, but I heard tell they work just fine if you make ‘em right. Probably gotta be careful in the rain though, wouldn’t want your house meltin’ away like a sugar cube.
Them Concrete Bricks, Heavy as a Mule
Then there’s them concrete bricks. Heavy as a mule, they are. Made outta that concrete stuff, same stuff they use for sidewalks and such. Mostly see ‘em inside houses, or maybe for them fancy walls around rich folks’ yards. They pour that concrete into molds, you see, make ‘em all the same shape. Not as pretty as the burnt bricks, in my opinion, but they do the job.
The Sand and Lime Bricks, the Smooth Ones
And don’t forget them sand and lime bricks. They mix sand and lime, and sometimes some color, to make ‘em look fancy. Strong too, real strong. They say they can hold up a lot of weight. Seen a few houses made outta them, smooth and even, not like them bumpy burnt bricks.
The Engineer’s Bricks, the Super Strong Ones
Lastly, there’s what they call “engineer’s bricks.” Now, these are the real tough guys. Strongest of the bunch, they say. Them engineers, they like ‘em ‘cause they can hold up anything, or so they claim. Probably use ‘em for them big tall buildings downtown, the ones that scrape the sky.
So, there you have it. All sorts of brick houses, all sorts of bricks. Burnt ones, sun-dried ones, concrete ones, sand and lime ones, and engineer’s ones. Each one a little different, but they all do the same thing: keep you safe and sound, and give you a place to hang your hat. Though, I still say, a good old burnt brick house is the best. Sturdy and reliable, just like me.
Which brick is best? Well, that depends on what you’re buildin’ and how much money you got, I reckon. But for a good ol’ house, you can’t go wrong with them burnt bricks. They been around forever, and they’ll be around for a long time to come, long after I’m gone, that’s for sure.
Building a house ain’t easy though, no matter what kind of brick you use. You gotta dig a big hole, pour the foundation, lay them bricks just right, and then put on a roof. Takes a lot of work, a lot of sweat, and a whole lot of know-how. But when it’s done, you got yourself a home, a place to call your own. And that’s worth more than all the bricks in the world.
