Okay, so I’ve been wanting to build a pizza oven in my backyard for, like, forever. I finally decided to just go for it! The biggest question I had was: what kind of bricks should I use? I did a bunch of digging, and here’s what my journey looked like.
My Brick Research Adventure
First, I started poking around online. Forums, DIY sites, you name it. I quickly learned that regular house bricks are a big NO-NO. Apparently, they can crack or even explode from the intense heat. Yikes!

Then I found out about firebricks. These seemed like the way to go, since they’re made specifically for high temperatures. But, surprise! There are different types of firebricks.
Choosing the Right Firebricks
I learned there are these things called “medium-duty” and “high-duty” firebricks. The high-duty ones are tougher, but also more expensive. I was tempted to go for the cheaper option, but after reading more, I realized skimping on the bricks could mean my oven wouldn’t last as long or hold heat as well.
- Medium-duty firebricks: Seemed okay, could handle the heat, but I was worried about long-term durability.
- High-duty firebricks: More expensive, but seemed like the best bet for a long-lasting oven.
Getting My Hands Dirty (Literally)
I ended up going to a local brickyard. It was kinda cool, seeing all the different types of bricks stacked up. I talked to this guy who seemed to know his stuff, and he confirmed that high-duty firebricks were the best choice for a pizza oven that I wanted to use regularly and get REALLY hot.
I ended up buying a pallet, much heavy! and had to have some friends help me unload it.
Building the Oven!
The actual building process was…well, let’s just say it was a learning experience! I followed a design I found online (it wasn’t super easy, but I muddled through). Laying the firebricks was actually pretty satisfying. It felt like I was building something that would last, something that would create awesome pizzas for years to come.
The Payoff: Pizza!
After a lot of sweat and a few (okay, maybe more than a few) curse words, the oven was finally done! I let it cure for a while, then did a few small test fires to get it seasoned. And then…pizza time! The first pizza I cooked in there was AMAZING. The crust was crispy, the cheese was bubbly, and it cooked SO fast. Totally worth all the effort.

So, if you’re thinking about building your own pizza oven, definitely go with high-duty firebricks. They might cost a bit more upfront, but trust me, it’s an investment that will pay off in deliciousness!
