Alright, so the other day, I got this crazy idea to build a little pizza oven in my backyard. You know, one of those rustic, brick ones? Well, I needed firebricks for it, obviously. But I had no clue where to even start looking. I mean, where does one buy firebricks?
First, I started looking it up online. The stuff I found out was kind of all over the place. There’s like these fancy “hard firebricks” and they’re really good at holding up to heat, and there are “soft” ones that help keep the heat in. This one called “Mizzou” seems super tough, and “Kast-o-lite” is more like the soft kind. Both can handle the stuff that melts regular bricks, which is good to know. And get this – the better the clay they use, the more expensive these bricks get.
Next, I started looking for suppliers, I saw some ads about “free delivery” and “next-day delivery.” Like, who needs firebricks that fast? But hey, maybe some people do. I even saw an ad for smoke detectors mixed in there. Probably not a bad idea to have one of those nearby when I fire up this oven, honestly.
Then there’s this company, “Andrews & Arnold,” that sells them, but it seems like you gotta go through some “approved” sellers to get them. Seems a bit complicated for just buying some bricks.
Here’s what I actually did:
- Called up some local hardware stores. Most of them were like, “Firebricks? What’s that?” One guy actually laughed.
- Tried a few bigger stores. One of them had some, but they were super expensive and looked a bit beat up.
- Went to a place that specializes in building supplies. Bingo! They had a whole section of different types of firebricks. They even had this chart explaining the different kinds.
- Talked to the guy working there. He was super helpful. Told me all about the different types, what they’re good for, and how much I’d need for my little oven.
- Ended up buying a bunch of medium-density firebricks. They weren’t too expensive, and the guy said they’d be perfect for what I was building.
So yeah, it took a bit of searching, but I finally found my firebricks. Now, the real fun begins – actually building the oven! Wish me luck, I have a feeling this is going to be quite the project.
