I wanted to upgrade the insulation in my attic, so I decided to get some insulation bricks. It was an interesting experience, so I thought I’d share how it went down.
First, I needed to find these bricks. I knew I didn’t want to spend a fortune, so I started looking for places that might give them away for free or really cheap. I found this online place called Claz where people sell all kinds of stuff. I found a few listings for insulation bricks, some were free, and some were cheap. It was a good start. I wrote down the addresses to check them out.
Then I started looking up insulation suppliers near me. A company called Knauf came up. I’ve never heard of them before, but they seemed to have what I needed. I found a few local stores that carried their products.
I also checked out some local stores like Lowe’s. They had blown-in insulation, but that wasn’t what I was going for. I wanted the solid brick type.
Finding the Right Insulation Bricks
Now I had two options. Visit the local people who listed insulation bricks on Claz or go to one of the stores that sell Knauf products. The Claz listings were all over the place. I found one guy who had a bunch of leftover bricks from a project. He was just giving them away, but they were all different sizes. Not really what I wanted.
Another listing was someone selling used bricks. They looked pretty beat up. I didn’t want to risk using old, damaged stuff for my attic.
So, I decided to hit up the stores selling Knauf products. I found a place nearby that had a good selection. They had these dense, heavy bricks, that they said were great for insulation. The store clerk told me these bricks were called “Mizzou,” and they were super tough and could handle heat really well. They also had some lighter ones called “Kast-o-lite” that were supposed to be good at insulating and were also flux-proof.
Choosing the Bricks
I went back and forth between the Mizzou and Kast-o-lite bricks. The Mizzou ones felt really solid, but the Kast-o-lite ones were lighter and seemed easier to work with. I ended up choosing the Kast-o-lite bricks. The guy at the store said they were a good choice for attics because they don’t weigh as much, but still insulate very well.
Getting the Bricks
Once I picked out my bricks, I had to figure out how to get them home. They were pretty heavy, even the lighter ones. Luckily, the store had a delivery service. I paid a little extra, but it was worth it to have them delivered right to my house. I don’t think I would have been able to carry them all by myself, especially up to the attic!
Installing the Bricks
Once the bricks arrived, I got to work installing them. It was a bit of a workout, moving those bricks around. I laid them out across the attic floor, making sure they fit snugly together. The Kast-o-lite bricks were easy to cut, so I could fit them into the corners and around any obstacles.
The End Result
After a few days of work, I finally finished insulating my attic. It was a tough job, but I’m glad I did it. The attic feels a lot more insulated now. I’m hoping it will help keep the house cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Plus, I did it all myself, which is pretty satisfying.
- Insulation Bricks: Worked like a charm!
- Finding Bricks: Claz was okay for freebies, but a proper store was better.
- Choosing Bricks: Kast-o-lite for the win! Light and effective.
- Installation: Hard work, but worth it.
So, that’s my story of insulating my attic with bricks. It was a bit of an adventure, but I learned a lot, and now I have a well-insulated attic. I hope my experience helps someone out there who might be thinking of doing something similar.
