Alright, so today I messed around with some refractory fiber felt, and let me tell you, it was quite the experience. I’ve been needing to insulate this old kiln in my workshop, and I heard these felts were good for that. So, I got my hands on some of this stuff to give it a shot.
First off, getting the felt was a bit of a mission. I looked around a few places, and, I finally found a supplier that had the type I needed. They talked about how it’s light and flexible, and honestly, that’s exactly what I was looking for. I didn’t want anything too rigid that would be a pain to work with.
Once I got the felt, the real fun began. Cutting it to size was pretty easy, thankfully. It’s not like dealing with metal or anything that needs special tools. I just used a big pair of scissors, and it sliced through like butter. It’s kind of satisfying, really.
- Next step was fitting it into the kiln.
- This part was a bit tricky because I had to make sure it fit snugly in all the right places.
- The flexibility of the felt really helped here.
- I could mold it and shape it to fit the curves and corners of the kiln.
- It was like working with thick, fluffy fabric, but way more heat-resistant, obviously.
After a bit of wrangling and adjusting, I managed to get it all in place. I also used some of it to fill in the expansion joints, which was super easy because the felt is pretty strong and elastic. No ripping or tearing, which was a relief. I didn’t want to have to redo any of it.
Testing it out
So, with everything in place, I fired up the kiln to see how well it held up. And let me tell you, I was impressed. The heat retention was noticeably better. It heated up faster and seemed to hold the temperature more consistently. It’s a bit early to say for sure, but I think this felt is going to make a big difference in how efficiently I can use the kiln.
All in all, it was a successful experiment. It wasn’t too hard to work with, and the results seem promising. If you’re looking to insulate something that gets really hot, you might want to check out this refractory fiber felt. It’s pretty neat stuff, if you ask me.
